Planned by LACMTA, the Purple Line Extension, formerly known as the Westside Subway Extension and the Subway to the Sea, is a new heavy rail subway corridor in Los Angeles County, extending the Metro Purple Line from its current terminus at Wilshire/Western station in Los Angeles to the Westside region. The Extension provides a high-capacity, high-speed, and dependable alternative for commuters to travel between downtown Los Angeles, the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills and Westwood, where stations will be near the University of California, Los Angeles and the Veterans Affairs Hospital. The $7.8 billion project includes a nine-mile extension of the underground rail system and was built in three phases. The first phase of construction on the project began in 2014 and opened to riders in 2023.

MacDonald-Bedford has been providing engineering consulting services since 2014 as a part of the Project Management Oversight (PMO) contract held by Urban Engineers. Consistent with the FTA’s ‘Oversight Procedure 25, Recurring Oversight and Related Reports’, our engineer gathers and reports information related to the design and construction of the project as well as the LACMTA’s ability to implement the project. M-B actively and routinely engages the LACMTA with suggested approaches to problem identification and alternatives analysis. Furthermore, through periodic and ad hoc reports, MacDonald-Bedford keeps the Urban/FTA informed of findings, project status, issues of concern and recommendations for action which allows the FTA to make proper and timely decisions regarding project advancement and funding.
