MacDonald-Bedford (M-B) was a sub-consultant to ikon5 Architects which was contracted to progress schematic design into final design and contract documents for a $17M expansion and improvements to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor and site including exhibit expansion. The demolition of an existing gallery and the new expansion increased the facility from 7,500 SF to 12,000 SF of improved visitor circulation, increased reception/orientation space and program/event space, integrated new audio-visual displays and provided additional collection storage space. For its efforts, the ikon5 Architects team was presented with the 2023 Honor Award by the Society of American Registered Architects (SARA) National Design Awards.

The mission of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is to collect, preserve and share the stories of all Purple Heart recipients. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is situated on Temple Hill, the site of the New Windsor Cantonment, which was the final encampment of the Continental Army in the winter of 1782-1783 from where General George Washington established the Legion of Merit, the forerunner of the Purple Heart.

MacDonald-Bedford’s contributions included design and commissioning as well as assistance with the bidding and construction administration phases. M-B developed plans and specifications for the fire sprinkler design, including a new site service. M-B helped develop the Owner’s Project Requirements (OPR), established and coordinated the commissioning plan and oversaw its execution, conducting site testing of the mechanical systems at the end of construction for quality assurance and compliance with the OPR and contract documents, then prepared and submitted final commissioning reports using CxAlloy software.
